Neighborhood and Conversations
by Carol Bumanglag

This year’s 16th batch of participants had several reasons for not joining the training. However, as the program continued, most of them expressed their appreciation to those who encouraged them to join the ten months course. For adults, especially for women, it is a challenge to squeeze another activity into their busy schedule.

Cielo, a community-based pre-school teacher, took her home and school responsibilities with passion. She was hesitant at first to join the Certificate in Wholistic Ministry Program but with the encouragement of her husband and a former alumna, she was able to finish the course last April. Through her learnings and discussions with co-participants, she began to critically reflect on her work, personal relationships, and community engagement in a whole new way.

She realized that she never really stopped to listen to her neighbors whenever they wanted to start a conversation with her. She would take a cursory look at them and go on with her own life. However, through thoughtful reflection of what she learned about being a neighbor, she initiated small talks with the women in her neighborhood which resulted to a deepening relationship with them. The neighbors began to notice what she was doing including her small vegetable garden. They also wanted to have their own potted gardens. She was also able to organize a project called Kusina (Kumita si Nanay) where mothers sold NFA rice. Later, they sold commercial rice and are now cooking healthy meals for children in Cielo’s school. They are not only earning but experiencing real community.

Cielo’s experience resonates with Maripaz’s journey as a participant in the program. She is the 5th member of her family to join Lilok’s training programs. At first, she could not understand why her sister is spending too much time talking to their neighbors. She thought this was a waste of time. Through her new understandings and awareness of the need to be engaged in her neighbors’ life, she is taking some baby steps, making attempts at starting conversations with people in the community.
